Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović and Gracija Filipović nominated for Gotham Awards

Director and screenwriter Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović has been nominated for the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award for her multi-award-winning feature debut Murina, while the lead actress in the film, Gracija Filipović, is being considered as best Breakthrough Performer. The 32nd Gotham Awards are presented to independent film and media creators by the Gotham Film & Media Institute, while the winners will be announced at a gala ceremony on 28th November in New York.

Murina had its world premiere in 2021 at the Cannes Film Festival, where it immediately scooped up the Golden Camera (Camera d'Or) for best first feature in one of Cannes’ selections. To date, it has screened at over 60 festivals winning more than 20 awards and recognitions. Along with the prestigious accolade from Cannes, it took home Best Narrative Feature from the Hamptons, while Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović was honoured with the Femme Du Cinema award for best newcomer at the Les Arcs Film Festival in France. At home, Kusijanović received the Vladimir Nazor Award of the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media presented each year for best artistic achievement.   

In February of this year, Gracija Filipović, who stars in the film, was selected for the Berlinale Shooting Stars programme, organized by the European Film Promotion (EFP), the European network of national film agencies.

Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović penned the script together with Frank Graziano. The cast is made up of Gracija Filipović, Leon Lučev, Danica Ćurčić and Cliff Curts. The film’s producers are Danijel Pek (Antitalent) and Rodrigo Teixeira (RT Features), with co-producers Zdenka Gold (Spiritus Movens), Jožko Rutar (SPOK Films) and Miha Černec (Staragara). The distributor for the North American territory is Kino Lorber. 

Alongside Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović, nominated for the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award are: Charlotte Wells (Aftersun), Owen Kline (Funny Pages), Elegance Bratton (The Inspection), Beth de Araújo (Soft & Quiet) and Jane Schoenbrun (All Going to the World’s Fair). 

On the other hand, Gracija Filipović nominated for best Breakthrough Performer, is competing next to: Anna Cobb (We’re All Going to the World’s Fair), Frankie Corio (Aftersun), Anna Diop (Nanny) and Kali Reis (Catch the Fair One)

This year’s 32nd Gotham Awards feature a total of 23 full-length narrative films, 15 series and 35 acting performances in 12 categories. The nominations were announced on 25th October by actress Angelica Ross and producer and executive director of the Gotham Film & Media Institute Jeffrey Sharp. The video of the announcement is available here. In the running for the nominations were more than 500 films are series.  

The not-for-profit organization dedicated to independent film, the Gotham Film & Media Institute, presents the Gotham Awards to independent filmmakers and their works since 1991. The nominations are selected by a panel of film and TV critics, festival programmers and programming curators. A special jury made up of screenwriters, directors, actors, producers, editors and other key film creators, will decide the Gotham Awards winners, while the awards ceremony will take place on 28th November in New York.

The Gotham Awards are considered as the kick-off to the so-called awards season and an indicator of which films will be in the lead at other awards events such as the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG), the BAFTA Film Awards of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the Oscars, and other ceremonies.
