On the Other Side represents Croatia in the Oscar nomination run

Croatia's candidate for next year's motion picture Academy Award in the foreign language film category will be Zrinko Ogresta's On the Other Side, 15 representatives of the Croatian Filmmakers’ Association (HDFD) decided by secret vote on Tuesday. Three titles competed: Ungiven by Branko Schmidt, Shooting Stars by Ivan-Goran Vitez and On the Other Side by Zrinko Ogresta.

On the Other Side is a tense dramatic-thriller, written by Mate Matišić and Zrinko Ogresta. It is a film about a nurse named Vesna who, along with her two children, moved to Zagreb, running from events that nearly destroyed their lives, twenty years earlier. After successfully premiering in the official ‘Panorama’ competition at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it received a special jury mention from the European Cinemas Label jury, the film was screened at numerous international festivals in Hong Kong, Karlovy Vary, Belgrade, Sarajevo, La Rochelle, etc. It won seven Arenas at this year’s Pula Film Festival including the Grand Prix and Arenas for Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor/Actress. The film is also a Belgrade FEST laureate, and it recently won the Grand Prix at the Herceg-Novi Festival.

The cinematographer is Branko Linta, the editor is Tomislav Pavlic, the composers are Šimun and Mate Matišić, and the film stars are multiple award-winning Ksenija Marinković and Lazar Ristovski. Zagreb’s Interfilm produced the film, and co-producers are Belgrade’s Zillion Films and Croatian Radio Television (HRT). The film is co-financed with subsidies provided by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre.

Oscar Nominations Announcement will be held on January 24, 2017, while The 89th Academy Awards ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on February 26th, 2017.
