Tourism! in Karlovy Vary: Tonći Gaćina among 10 most prospective young European filmmakers
Tonći Gaćina’s thesis documentary film Tourism! is one of 10 films to be screened in the Future Frames programme of the 51st Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, running from July 1st to 9th, 2016.
The Future Frames initiative’s aim is to draw attention to prospective young names in European cinematography, and it is was founded by European Film Promotion (EFP) in cooperation with the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The programme consists of 10 short and mid-length films made within the scope of an educational institution (film academy or school), and included in this year’s selection is Tonći Gaćina’s film Tourism!, his thesis project in documentary studies at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb.
Gaćina’s film is focused on tourism, currently Croatia’s most prospective economic branch, and with a mix of irony and sympathy it chronicles a few tales of creative ways in which locals are trying to enrich local tourist attractions and make some money along the way. Tonći Gaćina was born in Split in 1983. He completed his Film and Video studies at the Arts Academy in Split, and in 2015 graduated with a degree in Film and Television Direction, with a focus on Documentary Film, from the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb. His short student works Heritage (2010) and Fire! (2012) were screened at ZagrebDox, while Tourism! had its international premiere at one of the most well-respected documentary film festivals, Vision du Réel, in Nyon.
Along with Gaćina’s film Tourism!, nine other films from Austria, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Poland and Norway, will be screened in the Future Frames programme. Also included in this year’s selection are Roxana Stroe’s A Night in Tokoriki (Romania), which received the special prize of the Generation 14plus programme at this year’s Berlinale, as well as Davit Pirtskhalava’s Father (Georgia), last year’s winner of the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival. Future Frames is a two day event which will be held on May 4th and 5th during the 51st Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Participants, besides screenings, will have the opportunity to participate in networking events designed to ease these students’ first professional steps in the international film industry.
