The Split Cinematheque Zlatna vrata Named European Cinema of the Month

Film New Europe, an online publication and a website focusing on audiovisual and cinema industry in 18 countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltics, has chosen the Split Cinematheque Zlatna vrata as the European cinema of the month in September.

At that occasion, the Film New Europe website published an interview with director Snježana Lisičić, who says her greatest challenge was to keep and increase the number of people loving and watching classic and art films.

The Zlatna vrata Cinematheque was digitalised in late 2013 as part of the Independent Cinam Digitalization project, jointly implemented by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre and Ministry of Culture, with the support of local authorities. All things considered, it is now easier for us to screen films; after the digitalization process they have become more available. Nevertheless, there are still enthusiasts who love all that goes with 35 mm tape, like a musician playing the soundtrack live, so we are continuing with the 35 mm tape screenings, said Lisičić.

She also says that in 2013 the number of visitors increased, which is considered a great success given that, among other things, they show international black and white and silent classics. Still, she feels a lack of young audience. We are in constant contact with teachers and we screen films related to the curriculum. For instance, when they learn about Tolstoy or read Ana Karenina, we offer them to watch a film at our Cinematheque. Still, a lot depends on the teachers’ enthusiasm, said director Lisičić in conclusion. The entire interview is available on this link.

The Cinematheque has been active since 1971 as part of the Centre for Culture and Lifelong Learning Zlatna vrata. This institution boasts a long tradition of providing educational and cultural programmes for all age groups in the Split and Dalmatia region. The centre was established way back in 1925, with City of Split as its founder and owner.
