Osijek’s Urania – European Cinema of the Month

Film New Europe, an online publication and a website focusing on audiovisual and cinema industry in 18 countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltics, has chosen Osijek’s Urania cinema as the European cinema of the month in May.

On that occasion, the Film New Europe website published an interview with Marijana Bošnjak, CEO of Kinematografi Osijek, who explained how Urania works and what does their collaboration with the international cinema operator network Europa Cinemas looks like. The entire interview is available here.

Urania cinema was digitalised in 2013 thanks to the Independent Cinema Digitalization project, jointly implemented by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre and Ministry of Culture, with the support of local authorities. Digitalization played an important role in the new strategy and implementation of a new business model. It helped us create a culturally more diverse offer, with added values (workshops, panels, concerts, performances, new media), which in turn allowed us greater flexibility in creating alternative entertainment so as to create custom-made projects and programmes, said Bošnjak.

Kinematografi Osijek, the company running Urania, was several weeks ago chosen by Europa Cinemas as the Croatian partner in promotion of audiovisual activities with the 28 Times Cinema programme. In this programme, at least one Urania visitor age 18-25 will have a chance to spend 10 days at the Venice Film Festival, participate in different ‘insider’ events, see all films with a priority pass, and hang out with some of the most important names in the film world. All the costs will be covered, and the candidate selection process in under way.

Urania Cinema is located in an Art Nouveau building in Osijek’s Gornji grad, designed by architect Viktor Axmann and built in 1912. Until this day it preserved its original purpose and is considered one of the most important pieces of Art Nouveau architecture in Croatia.
