New Directors/New Films: Fiume o morte! North American premiere at MoMA

Director Igor Bezinović’s documentary feature Fiume o Morte!, produced by Restart, screened at New York’s famous MoMA and the Lincoln Center, as part of the 54th edition of New Directors/New Films festival, which takes place from 2 to 13 April. The filmmaker presented his latest title live in a Q&A session after each of the screenings.
The audience could catch the film at the Lincoln Center on 4 April and at MoMa on 5 April.
Award-winning filmmaker Igor Bezinović, the winner of the Grand Golden Arena for his drama feature A Brief Excursion in 2017 (which also screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in the section Bright Future), creatively examines the aftermath of an occupation and its effects on the city and its residents. In order to find answers, the author engages the residents of Rijeka, in Italy known as Fiume, who recount, reconstruct and reinterpret the bizarre story of the 16-month occupation of their city in 1919, by the Italian poet, dandy and war advocate Gabriele D’Annunzio.
The film had its world premiere at this year’s International Film Festival Rotterdam, taking home two awards: the Tiger Award for Best Film in the main competition and the FIPRESCI Prize.
Fiume o Morte! hit Croatian theatres in February and garnered more than ten thousand viewers in the first month, becoming the most watched film in the history of Rijeka’s Art-kino Croatia and being included among the five most watched Croatian documentaries of all time.
The film was produced by Restart, with producers Vanja Jambrović and Tibor Keser, in co-production with Nosorogi from Slovenia (co-producer Marina Gumzi) and Videomante from Italy (co-producer Erica Barbiani).
The New Directors/New Films festival is jointly organised by New York’s MoMa – The Museum of Modern Art, and Film at Lincoln Center, a nonprofit organization celebrating cinema as an essential art form, with the aim of promoting new creative filmmakers working in the field of avant-garde cinema. This year’s, 54th edition of the festival, takes place from 2 to 13 April. More information about the festival’s programme is available at its official website.
