Marija's Own awarded by FEDEORA critics at the 46th Karlovy Vary IFF
Mockumentary film Marija's Own by Croatian director Željka Sukova has won the Federation of Film Critics of Europe and the Mediterranean Award (FEDEORA) at the 46th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Czech Republic).
Subtitled Film about Grandma for A Festivals, film records humorous attempts of three cousins (Nina Violić, Željka Sukova and Mila Čuljak) to pay their last respects to their grandmother. Film was shown in East of the West competition program of Karlovy Vary IFF, along with 11 other films from Eastern and Central Europe. FEDEORA jury was formed by three European film critics: Eva Af Geijerstam, Vladan Petković and Blagoja Kunovski.
Whatever the genre, Marija’s Own is a delightful film with colourful characters who exchange humorous lines under the influence of red wine, stage a surrealistic 'mourning session' at a garbage dump by the sea and dance to the music of Midi Lidi. The editing includes old home videos of Marija and her grand-daughters, creating a functional mix of fun and nostalgia, wrote Vladan Petković for Cineuropa website.
Marija’s Own had its world premiere at the documentary film festival Hot Docs in Toronto this year in May. It was produced by Udruga UKUS from Rijeka (Croatia), edited by Czech director Aleš Suk. Also, guest starring in film is Czech underground electro band Midi Lidi.
FEDEORA is the Federation of Film Critics of Europe and the Mediterranean; founded in May 2010 in Cannes. It is constituted of individual professional film critics from European and Mediterranean countries
