FNE Chooses Rijeka’s Art-kino as Cinema of the Month

Film New Europe, an online publication and a website focusing on audiovisual and cinema industry in 18 countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltics, named Rijeka’s Art-kino the European cinema of the month in April.

To that occasion, Film New Europe’s website published an interview with the cinema manager Slobodanka Mišković. The entire interview is available here.

Art-kino is a moderate combination of a cinematheque and an art house. We screen over 600 titles annually, host around 20 festivals, events and shows, organise filmmaker cycles, premieres, debates, magazine or book presentations, and many other film-related events. The film programme takes place at Art-kino Croatia, an open-air summer cinema and mini Art-kino,” explained Slobodanka Mišković.

The first screenings at Art-kino Rijeka took place in 1926, and the cinema was digitised in 2013 as part of the Independent Cinema Digitisation project, jointly implemented by Croatian Audiovisual Centre and Ministry of Culture, with the support of local administrations. The number of visitors is on the constant growth, and last year more than 34 thousand visitors stepped their foot in Art-kino.

The number of visitors is currently rising, but the greatest challenge is to attract a younger audience. Another challenge is fundraising, and there are occasional glitches with distributers regarding copyright. We are glad that our results show that we are successfully battling these challenges and creating an important reference point for filmmakers and film lovers,” said the manager.
