Croatian titles at 24th Ji.hlava

The 24th edition of the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival, held entirely in digital format, 25th Oct – 8th Nov, will screen two Croatian titles: the feature film, Landscape Zero, directed by Bruno Pavić, which will have its world premiere in the competition programme Between the Seas, and the short film by Igor Bezinović and Ivana Pipal, Microcassette – The Smallest Cassette I've Ever Seen.

“We are very pleased that ‘Landscape Zero’ will have its world premiere at the biggest documentary film festival in Central and Eastern Europe. When the programme at Ji.hlava was announced, the very next we were contacted by other festivals and distributors, and, thanks to the contacts that we made at different markets where we presented our film, we predict very fruitful distribution for the film. The film functions on two levels – artistic and ecological, so it has strong distribution potential, which we believe we will make the most of, given the situation with the coronavirus that has undoubtedly had an effect on the film industry,” said the film’s director Bruno Pavić on the occasion of Landscape Zero’s world premiere at Ji.hlava IDFF.

The film is screening in the Between the Seas section, which “brings the best documentary production from Central and Eastern Europe, reflecting on the topic of our search for home.”

Landscape Zero is an observational documentary that introduces the issues of the co-existence of nature, people and industry along the shores of the Adriatic Sea. It was produced by Ivan Perić (Kazimir production), Andrea Kaštelan is credited with cinematography, together with Dan Oki and Dragan Dokić as editors and Vjeran Šalamon as music composed and sound designer.

Landscape Zero was developed at the documentary film workshop, Ex Oriente, organized by the Institute of Documentary Film (the Czech Republic), and has participated at the market dedicated to documentary films in production and postproduction phase, Docu Talents from the East, organized during Sarajevo Film Festival by the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival. The film was created with support from the Croatian Audiovisual Centre and the City of Split.

The “best of fests” Constellations programme, dedicated to recent films that have already had considerable success at world festivals, will screen Microcassette – The Smallest Cassette I've Ever Seen, a Croatian-Serbian short directed by duo Igor Bezinović and Ivana Pipal. The film is a Bonobostudio production, in co-production with Teorija na delu (producer is Vanja Jandrijević, with Dragana Jovović and Marta Popivoda as co-producers), while, in addition to directing the film, Igor Bezinović and Ivana Pipal also co-wrote the screenplay. Microcassette had its world premiere at this year’s Sarajevo Film Festival and it is about to screen in the short film competition of Viennale – Vienna International Film Festival (held 22nd Oct – 1st Nov).

The 24th edition of the prestigious festival held in the Czech city of Jihlava will take place online, via the festival’s VoD platform DAFilms. The organizers have highlighted a unique feature of this year’s programme in that a portion of the films will be available not only to Czech audience but around the world.

Ji.hlava IDFF will screen over 220 films, while the viewers around the world will be able to watch the ones that will have their world, international or European premieres at the festival.
