Aleksi is a story about a 28-year-old girl who, unable to find work after graduating from university, returns to live with her parents. Attempting to escape boredom and responsibility, she pursues several summer love affairs. Filmed around the picturesque landscape of the Pelješac peninsula in the southern Adriatic, Barbara Vekarić’s feature debut tells the story of a belated bloomer and offers a fresh take on gender roles usually found in typical island comedies, at the same time critically examining a generation born in the late 1990s. Barbara Vekarić also penned the script, while the film’s producers are Marina Andree Škop and Darija Kulenović Gudan of Studio Dim.

Aleksi is part of the programme titled “Outside the Frame: Focus on Contemporary Croatian Cinema". The selection of films also includes Comic Sans by Nevio Marasović, A Brief Excursion by Igor Bezinović and Quit Staring at My Plate directed by Hana Jušić, which will be exhibited in autumn. Details about the programme will be presented at a later date.

The programme “Outside the Frame: Focus on Contemporary Croatian Cinema” is part of a series of cultural events organized to commemorate the Croatian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, jointly organized by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia and BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels.
