46th Clermont-Ferrand: Cul-de-Sac in competition; Baking with Boris world premiere
Croatian-Portuguese live action-experimental short film Cul-de-Sac, directed by duo Vanja Vascarac and Mário Macedo, has been selected for screening in the main competition at the prestigious Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival held in France. Maša Avramović’s animated short Baking with Boris, which is a French-Swiss-Croatian co-production (Adriatic Animation) will have its world premiere in the children’s programme. Also, a special focus programme dedicated to female European filmmakers will include two more Croatian titles. This year’s 46th edition of the festival will run 2nd – 10th February.
Cul-de-Sac follows a group of skaters stuck in a shopping mall from which there seems to be no way out. They spend their time wandering around empty corridors and halls, but little by little, dead time seems to engulf them more and more.
The film is directed by duo Vanja Vascarac and Mário Macedo. The cinematographer is Filip Romac, assistant director Tin Žanić, while the sound design was created by Maurício D’Orey. The film is a production between companies Olhar de Ulisses (Portugal) and Vertigo Media (Croatia), while international distribution is handled by Agência, a Portuguese distributor operating with the support of the Portuguese Film Institute.
The film had its world premiere in competition at the Curtas Vila do Conde festival in Portugal, while at Clermont-Ferrand it will screen in the international competition alongside 65 other titles from 51 countries.
The children’s film programme, Enfants, will premiere Maša Avramović’s animation short, Baking with Boris.
Every morning, the village baker Boris bakes bread and pastry for his fellow townspeople, until one day he suddenly gets a sneezing fit. He has become allergic to flour! How will he go on baking for the village?
The film is a French-Swiss-Croatian co-production, with Croatian co-producer Draško Ivezić (Adriatic Animation). Alongside Ivezić as the co-producer, who also did the compositing, Croatian film crew members include editor Iva Kraljević, sound designer Jure Buljević and assistant director Marko Dješka.
Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival this year dedicates its panorama programme Eurovisions to female filmmakers from across Europe. The programme will showcase 24 authors with 22 titles, coming from 25 countries. Eurovisions will also include Estonian-Croatian-Canadian animation Manivald created by Chintis Lundgren (2017), again with co-producer and co-writer Draško Ivezić (Adriatic Animation), as well as Katarzyna Gondek’s Deer Boy realised as a Polish-Belgian-Croatian co-production (Croatian co-producer is Barbara Vekarić, Film association Motion).
This year’s 46th Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival will take place 2nd – 10th February. The festival consists of three competition programmes (international, national and Lab), and every year also offers a rich side programme.
