In the early 1990s, Martin and his father are living in a small village in Croatia. They moved there during the War of Independence, after losing contact with Martin’s mother, whose fate is uncertain: she may have died, or emigrated to Australia. Martin collects Animal Empire cards in an album with his father; the only card still missing from his collection is the kangaroo card. When the album is full, he will be able to send his off his album and claim a big prize. Martin has spent three years of his life building his collection – and he is determined to track down the missing final card, the kangaroo.
