The Mysterious Boy is Weekend's Box Office No1

The Mysterious Boy, a new adaptation of little boy Koko’s literary adventures, directed by Dražen Žarković, has surpassed all other theatre titles and topped last weekend’s box office. Its regular theatre distribution across Croatia began on Thursday, 28 February, and it has so far been seen by 11,617 viewers, grossing a total of 309,230.00 kuna during the opening weekend.

The Mysterious Boy is a film about a group of 14-year-olds solving a mystery and at the same time discovering what it means to be adult. Koko’s friend Tomo recently came to town and is starving for adventure. In school, the new, mysterious, funnily-behaving boy attracts the boys’ attention. Together with their school mate Marijana they embark on an adventure that will finally reveal the new student’s well-kept secret. Still, solving mysteries is not a game and the resolution is much scarier than they first thought.

The leading role of Koko is played by Antonio Parač and the rest of the cast includes Karlo Maloča, Toma Budanko, Vanja Markovinović, Filip Ružić, Nina Mileta and Kristian Bonačić. The film was directed by Dražen Žarković, based on the famous namesake novel, whose screenplay was adapted by Hana Jušić with the help of Dražen Žarković and Daniel Kušan, the cinematographer was Mario Sablić, editor Slaven Zečević, and music composer Dinko Appelt. The Mysterious Boy was produced by Kinorama, in co-production with Croatian National Television, and co-funded by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre and MEDIA Programme. The film distribution is entrusted to 2i Film.

I have to say it’s a great feeling when a film works so well with live audience; I am really pleased and believe The Mysterious Boy will live a long theatre life – said director Dražen Žarković.

This score is a continuation of the prequel, Koko and Ghosts, seen by 86,000 people in theatres, but also another in a series of box office successes achieved by Croatian films in the past months.

The Priest’s Children by Vinko Brešan earned the title of most viewed Croatian film in the 21st century, with a score of almost 160,000 viewers. Vlatka Vorkapić’s romantic comedy Sonja and the Bull opened in late 2012 with a record-breaking box office score, and by now counts almost 100,000 viewers.
