Minority co-production Sieranevada nominated for LUX Film Prize

The Croatian minority co-production Sieranevada, by Romanian film director Cristi Puiu, has been selected for the 2016 LUX Awards, as one of ten films which promote European values and deal with social topics. This year is the tenth anniversary of the LUX Awards, an annual event organized by the European Parliament.

Sieranevada is about a family gathering at a commemorative dinner. Waiting for the priest’s arrival, attendees discuss related and unrelated events in the world, including wars. The film is a co-production between five countries – Romania, France, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Macedonia. Romania’s Mandragora leads production, while co-producers are Alcatraz Films (France), Spiritus Movens (Croatia), 2006. (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Sisters and Brother Mitevski (Macedonia). The Croatian producer is Zdenka Gold.

The official selection of the 10 competing films was announced at the recently held Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, and the three finalists will be announced at the end of July. The nominees, along Sieranevada, are: As I Open My Eyes by Leyla Bouzid (France, Tunisia, Belgium, United Arab Emirates), A Syrian Love Story by Sean McAllister (United Kingdom), Letters From War by Ivo M Ferreira (Portugal), A War by Tobias Lindholm (Denmark), Things to Come by Mia Hansen-Løve (France, Germany), Like Crazy by Paolo Virzi (Italy, France), My Life as a Zucchini by Claude Barras (Switzerland, France), Suntan by Argyris Papadimitropoulos (Greece, Germany) and Toni Erdmann by Maren Ade (Germany, Romania, Austria).
