Lana Barić’s short Sola in competition at 68th San Francisco International Film Festival



Director and writer Lana Barić’s short feature Sola to have its Californian premiere in competition at the 68th San Francisco International Film Festival. This is the longest-running US film festival whose winning titles directly enter the race for Oscar nominations.
Director and screenwriter Lana Barić’s drama short will screened in San Francisco on 22nd April, as part of the thematic block of short films about family relationships (Family Matters). Sola will be competing for the festival’s main prize, the Golden Gate Award, which direct puts it in the running for an Academy Award nomination.

Sola had its world premiere at last year’s Mediterranean Film Festival Split, and premiered internationally at the Brussels International Women’s Film Festival. It went on to screen at a number of international festivals, winning the top prize, the Golden Hugo, at the Klein Film Festival.
Sola tells the story of Karla who returns to her native island to attend her estranged father’s funeral. After years of staying away, she encounters all the old problems she left behind long ago, including the relationship with her mother and her ex-partner.
The cast is headed up by Marija Škaričić, Ivana Roščić, Snježana Sinovčić and Goran Marković. The director of photography on the project was Mitja Ličen, with production designer Tajana Čanić Stanković, costume designer Željka Franulović, make-up artist Snježana Gorup, alongside Ivan Perić as the executive producer, and Irena Marković, Ivan Perić and Lana Barić as the film’s producers. Sola is a Focus Media producuction, in co-production with Kino Club Split, and supported by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre and the City of Split.
