Croatian films at Bucheon International Animation Festival
Three Croatian titles to screen at the 22nd Bucheon International Animation Festival, held in Sotuth Korea, 23rd – 27th Oct. These are Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus, directed by Dalibor Barić, Natko Stipaničev’s animated short Arka, and The Adventures of Gloria Scott – Murder in the Cathedral, created by Matija Pisačić and Tvrtko Rašpolić.
Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus will screen in the Feature Film competition programme, alongside seven other titles from France, Japan, Norway and South Korea.
Dalibor Barić created the animation, directed and edited the film, wrote the screenplay and also composed the music, while the film’s producer is Ivan Katić (Kaos). The film premiered earlier this year, in the Feature Film competition programme at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The Short Film competition includes two Croatian titles: Arka, created by Natko Stipaničev and The Adventures of Gloria Scott – Murder in the Cathedral, by creative duo Matija Pisačić and Tvrtko Rašpolić.
Natko Stipaničev’s Arka also screened at this year’s edition of the prestigious festival in Annecy, while its Croatian premiere took place at the Mediterranean Film Festival Split, where it won the award for Best Croatian Short in the national competition, with Natko Stipaničev winning the award for best screenplay. Since premiering at Annecy, the Kreativni Sindikat production (Igor Grubić) has screened at numerous international festivals, including CinEast, CINÉMED, Anibar and Animafest Zagreb.
The Adventures of Gloria Scott – Murder in the Cathedral, directed and edited by Matija Pisačić and Tvrtko Rašpolić had its international premiere in competition of this year’s Annecy IAFF, while the film was created based on the story by Mima Simić, who also penned the script, together with Jasna Žmak and Matija Pisačić. The film’s producer is Dijana Mlađenović (Kinematograf), with Darko Lungulov (of Papa Films from Serbia) as co-producer.
All three films have been created with the support of the Croatian Audiovisual Centre.
The Bucheon International Animation Festival is the oldest and biggest animation festival in South Korea, while this year’s edition boasts 136 titles in six competition programmes (feature, short, student, TV and commissioned works, national shorts and VR). The winners in each category are chosen by an international jury, while the winning titles qualify for an Academy Award nomination in the categories of animated film.
The festival is held 23rd – 27th October, in accordance with epidemiological guidelines, while more information is available at Bucheon International Animation Festival’s official website.
