Croatian cinematography to be showcased at Mecal International Short and Animation Film Festival in Barcelona
The 18th Mecal International Short and Animation Film Festival in Barcelona, which will be held from March 10th to April 3rd, will organize an extensive focus on Croatian cinematography which will include successful contemporary films as well as classics from Zagreb’s School of Animation. Croatian animator Marko Meštrović will hold a masterclass and his work will be featured in a retrospective, while competitions will feature the short film The Beast by Daina O. Pusić, as well as the animated films Choban by Matija Pisačić, Life with Herman H. Rott by Chintis Lundgren and Nikola Tesla’s Secret Laboratory by Bruno Razum.
In cooperation with the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, the World Festival of Animated Film Animafest, and Zagreb Film, the programme Guest Country: Croatia is divided into six thematic parts. Current I and II feature internationally successful short and animated films, from Yellow Moon by Zvonimir Jurić which competed at the 2009 Berlinale, to Picnic by Jure Pavlović, latest winner of the European Film Awards for Best European Short Film. The programme encompasses and focuses on contemporary productions from Zagreb’s Academy of Dramatic Arts, as well as a selection from the rich tradition of Zagreb’s School of Animation and those screened at Animafest World Festival of Animated Film in Zagreb. There will also be a retrospective of Marko Meštrović’s works, and the successful and well-respected Croatian animator will also conduct a masterclass. Also competing at the festival is The Beast, a short film by Daina O. Pusić which was selected as the best in the Checkers programme at the last Zagreb Film Festival, and was also a special award winner at the Slamdance Film Festival. Three animated films will also be screening in the official competition: Choban by Matija Pisačić, Life with Herman H. Rott by Chintis Lundgren and Nikola Tesla’s Secret Laboratory by Bruno Razum.
Croatian animation will also be represented in a special non-competition program which will screen Arcadian Fever by Tea Stražičić (Trashanim) and Love and Vehicles by Draško Ivezić (Golden Shower).
