Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus at IFF Rotterdam

Experimental-animated feature Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus created by Dalibor Barić screening in the Harbour programme at International Film Festival Rotterdam. This year the festival is divided into two instalments: the first was held in February, while the hybrid-format second instalment is scheduled for 2nd – 6th June.

Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus is now available for online viewing at the IFFR VOD platform, while the audience will also have a chance to see it live on the big screen on June 3rd. The first cinema screening will be accompanied by a Q&A session with author Dalibor Barić.

The film is screening in the programme section Harbour, which, according to IFFR Director Vanja Kaluđerčić, encompasses a wide array of genres and topics, united by a common denominator of “excellence”. Kaluđerčić described Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus as “an extremely complex experimental film.”

Dalibor Barić’s film had its world premiere at last year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, after which it toured some of the most acclaimed film festivals around the world, including Animafest Zagreb, Bogota, Thessaloniki, Bucheon, Trieste, Hong Kong and others.

Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus was also one of the 27 titles longlisted for a nomination in the category of best animated feature film at the 93rd Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards. In addition, it was nominated for the Satellite Award for best feature animated or mixed media international film, awarded by the International Press Academy – IPA.

Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus is a story about Martin, who tried to fight the system and is now on the run, and conceptual artist Sara. Together they join a revolutionary commune in the countryside, with the police on their trail. Inspector Ambroz knows the right questions are more important than answers, because maybe none of this is true.

Dalibor Barić wrote, animated, directed and edited the film and composed the music, while Ivan Katić (of Kaos) is the film’s producer. Rakan Rushaidat, Ana Vilenica, Frano Mašković, Nikša Marinović, Mario Kovač, Željka Veverec, Boris Bakal and Pavlica Brazzoduro Bajsić lend voices to the characters, while Studio Nazor’s Dino Brazzoduro and Ivan Zelić did the sound design. The film was realized with the support from the Croatian Audiovisual Centre and the City of Rijeka.

This year’s edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam is divided into two instalments, with the second instalment happening right now, 2nd – 6th June, while the first portion of the festival was held in February and featured the screening of Croatian minority co-production Dead & Beautiful, by Dutch director David Verbeek (Croatian co-producer is Nukleus Film).

Apart from online screenings, the second portion of the festival offers live film screenings at cinemas, accompanied by Q&As with authors. More information about the festival can be found on IFFR’s official website.
