Two Furnaces for Udarnik Josip Trojko follows the disassembling of the famous Siemens-Martin furnace, which once stood at the heart of the huge Yugoslavian iron industry. The sons of former steel workers slowly take apart the old furnace, and then construct a new, larger, more modern furnace into which the pieces of the old furnace are fed. As we watch the old making way for the new, we hear off-camera archive recordings of political speeches, full of enthusiasm and ideological optimism, from the period when the old furnace was in operation. We also hear a voice from the past reading telegrams from Tito to the former forge workers, congratulating them on their tireless efforts at meeting production targets. The flow of the speeches follows the rhythm of construction of the new furnace to demonstrate that life, like steel, always continues to flow.
