The film explores concepts of civic/individual freedom and its relationship with the conventions of a state/collective through the metaphor of the now extinct art of European combat swordsmanship. The basis for the associative spectrum of the film is provided by one of the remaining manuscripts about combat swordsmanship, the Flos Duellatorum, written by the Italian master of fencing Fiore dei Liberi around 1410.
