Guardians of the City’s Soul is a documentary film about the artists of Zadar gathered around writer Tomislav Marijan Bilosnić and the Independent Platoon of Artists during the Homeland War. Faced with the trauma of destruction, loss, and constant uncertainty, they preserved not only the space of culture, but also the inner strength of their community through theatre performances, literary evenings, art exhibitions, and photography. Their work transcended artistic expression and became a testament to resistance, to the human need for beauty, and to the effort to preserve meaning, identity, and dignity in a time of violence. At the same time, the film highlights their important documentary role, as they photographed and filmed some of the key wartime devastation in the Zadar area, leaving behind a lasting record of the city’s resilience and the endurance of its people.
