Simon and Peter share a hospital room, and a friendship is born from their shared interests. The critically ill old man, crushed by his life, is filled with sadness, and he longs for the river, where he always felt happiest. Simon regrets not having published a collection of poems about the river as a legacy of his life. Feeling alone, he eagerly awaits the visit of his nephews, whom he raised as if they were his sons, but he realizes they only want what they can inherit from him.
