In the spring of 1946, large population migrations were organized in Yugoslavia from the passive rugged Dinaric regions to the fertile Pannonian plains of Slavonia, Baranja, Srijem, and Vojvodina. Entire villages are being relocated by train, including the inhabitants of the village of Dolac in Dalmatian Zagora, who received land and houses in the Baranja village of Topolovo. At the head of the Dolac migration is the president of the village committee, veteran Lovre, who likes the widow Ike. Lovra's brothers Duje and young Periša called Pešo also started the migration. There is also Pešo's comrade-in-arms, the sailor Nikolic, who also likes Ike. On the way, Pešo falls in love with Dana, a girl from a neighboring village, not knowing that she is already promised as a wife to the son of the Baranja landlord.
