Every 25th of May Yugoslavia demonstrated its power, among other things, with the celebration of Youth Day, where masses of people and athletes gathered in Belgrade to commemorate the birth of President Tito. In 1987, it was Slovenia’s turn to organize the celebrations with a poster and majestic theatre performance by the Neue Slowenische Kunst, held on an artificial island on Bohinj Lake, built specially for the occasion. A few weeks after the announcement, engineer Nikola Grujić sent a letter to the national newspapers saying that the poster had been copied from the Nazi’s. Amidst the subsequent media frenzy, the artists were arrested and questioned. In Youth Day 1987, Toma Bačić investigates the scandal and the parallels between Tito’s and Nazi regime, and probes the power of art and its effects on cultural expression.
