In January 2025, Los Angeles was struck by a devastating wildfire. The „City of Angels“ suddenly became a „hell on earth“. As we watch scenes of the fire, a force capable of instantly destroying everything people have built and accumulated over a lifetime, we hear a voice reciting biblical verses about hell, eternal fire, and the weeping and gnashing of teeth. The voice speaks in Koine Greek, the language used until the 4th century and in which the New Testament and the Septuagint were originally written. The symbiosis between the archaic, expressed through quotations from ancient texts in a dead language, and the visual manifestation of the fire’s destructive power opens a perspective on the metaphysical and eternal fire, which appears even more terrifying than the flames before which we are helpless in the physical world.
