Cheese and Cream is a film essay about the milkmaids of Zagreb, and about deep crises of political will and national identity from 2002 to 2006. Milkmaids are one of the symbols of Zagreb, but in recent years they have become an endangered species due to the economic turmoil of a society in transition. They may even become extinct in the very near future because the ways they produce and sell their products do not meet European standards for food hygiene. Is it possible for the milkmaids and their cottage cheese to join the European Union? Who are these milkmaids, anyway? Who should help them survive in the 21st century, and why? Are they an outdated relic, or would we miss them if they disappeared?
