The film presents a chronology of events in Croatia that culminated in the change of government in 2000. With the death of President Franjo Tuđman, the country is left without a central figure of political power, and parliamentary and presidential elections soon follow. Through the lives of nine politicians, the film closely follows the events of this turbulent period. Novo, novo vrijeme reveals for the first time what took place behind closed doors—how key political decisions were made, and what hopes and fears the leading politicians had. Through the country’s political maneuvers in a period of transition and anticipation of imminent change, the film bears witness to a historic turning point in Croatian history. Without commentary or interviews, it preserves the authenticity of events and gives viewers the impression of observing situations through a keyhole. By following some of the most influential figures in Croatian politics, Novo, novo vrijeme presents them in a light in which they had not been seen before. The film premiered in Croatian cinemas in 2001 and was seen by over 20,000 viewers. In 2010, following the end of President Mesić’s second term, it received an additional short documentary continuation titled After Ten Years.
